Personally

In my life, as in my work, the German and English languages and cultures exist side by side.

I was born, brought up and educated in England and subsequently worked there for over 15 years in research. I took part in interdisciplinary and international projects based at the Universities of Durham, Sheffield, Sunderland and Northumbria.

My translating career developed out of other events in my life. At the age of 18 I used a spell working as an Au-pair in Austria to learn the real-life German language. This meant that I became the person responsible for links with German colleagues in my later research work. Personal links grew from professional cooperation and caused me to move in 1994 to my present home in rural northern Germany.

I trained as a translator in Germany, at Hamburg's foreign language college, and have been working freelance since 1999. I find the work fascinating in its variety and in the challenges brought by each new task - getting to know a new subject area, making information comprehensible for a new group of readers, and conveying the feeling as well as the verbal content of written material across the language barrier.
